Weep not for Herbert Matter's NH logo. Its still in use on a daily basis on commuter trains operated between New York City and various Connecticut points operated by the Metro North Commuter Railroad. This is, to the best of my knowledge, the only time in history that the logo of a defunct company (the New Haven went out of business effective January 1, 1969) has continued in service for a completely different company. For the record, I wrote a book called "The New Haven Railroad in the McGinnis Era" that covers, in substantial detail, the design project that resulted in the NH logo and all the various red-orange, black, and white color schemes that were used to complement it. You can check the book out at http://whiteriverproductions.com/Books.html . It may also interest you to know that a documentary film producer is finishing up a documentary on Herbert Matter that will, among other things, cover the NH logo. See http://www.herbertmatter.net for details.

I've always loved the McGuiness New Haven logo. As a fan of the railroad, I even got my Ham call changed to end in NH. Sadly the New Haven is no longer with us, but the NH lives on in new and old livery on the New Haven line of MetroNorth Commuter RR (MNCRR). Funny, I met my wife who is a big MNCRR fan and now a big NH fan too. As far as a RR logo, the stylish NH has no peers and is easily recognized even now. An EP-5 or FL-9 sporting it is always a great sight.

Not only is this a great logo (especially when seen in context), Herbert Matter was instrumental in reducing into a typographic mark--originally this was the 'New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company', which, as you can imagine, had an unbelievably complex typographically muddled logo. When shortened to 'New Haven Railroad', it lost its visual identity amidst other railroad companies. Matter's ubiquitous and extremely successful logo brought NH to the forefront of railroad visual identities..

wow! beautiful. the form conjures up so many appropiate associations: train-tracks, networks, connections...

As a corporate entity, the New Haven Railroad might be gone, but the NH logo continues to be painted upon various diesel locomotives of the Metro-North Commuter Railroad (NH's successor, so I dispute that this is in fact a dead logo.

Hard to believe that this was created in the '50s! Surely the inspiration for many other great rail logos: Canadian, BR and NS...
