Condolence book for the passing of Riley 'Diamond Badge'

Last week the inevitable happened - the final chapter of a once proud and glorious British motoring history was closed: ROVER R.I.P.

The Leyland badge (forever likely to be synonymous with the dark days of the British Car Industry) is to blame for the death of fine heritage brands such as ‘Riley’ and ‘Wolseley’.

There is a true British marque remaining - MG Rover, now entirely British owned and expanding into China with a joint venture with SAIC... MGR owns the rights to Austin, Morris, Wolseley, Vanden Plas and some more, but BMW kept Triumph (for cars at least) and Riley. I would say that Triumph has a better chance of being revived (if BMW is still in that game), but Riley's "As old as the industry, as modern as the hour" tagline and very attractive blue-mauve colouring were far more consistent than Triumph's myriad of logos (the final "laurel wreath" as applied to the TR7/8 and Acclaim was just that: a funeral wreath).

Yes but it’s the same all across the board in every section of British industry. Look at the pub trade. Brewers such as Watneys, Coombe, Reid, Mann & Crossman, Trumans, Taylor Walker, Tolly Cobbold, Meux, Ind Coope, etc. all got taken over and killed off or turned into the brewery equivalent of an imprint, a bottle of beer!

My grandfather drove a Riley - a great car, ... I love all those old British car marques. Triumph, Humber, Wolseley, Riley, Singer, Sunbeam, Talbot, to name just a fraction. It’s a real shame that there is no remaining TRUE British marque.

I believe BMW tried to revive the Riley brand several years ago... they actually announced it in 1999, on the 100th anniversary of the Riley company.
