Condolence book for the passing of 3M 'Mondriaan Design'

The reason for this logo's name is because it was inspired, apparently, by the works of Piet Mondrian. They should bring this back, albeit spruced up and modernized.

This logo would kick ass today with a few modifications.

The current one is impersonal and easy to replicate yawn.

Rest In Peace.

I worked for a tv company in Finland in the early 80s and we bought all our tape from 3M Finland. On one occasion when we were all invited to a sponsored sauna evening at 3M, we were told that one of the reasons why 3M had recently modernised its logo was that many European potential customers were reluctant to deal with a Soviet Russian company! The letters were so alien as to appear Cyrillic to the uninitiated.

The new 3m logo looks like it was designed by a robot in 1981. This old design is fucking fantastic. Just wait, they'll revert to this one again in 15 years when more ornate typography is back in style. Actually it's in now, but it'll take them 15 years to catch on. It will, of course be way out of style by then.

What contributed most to a need for change from the 1961 system was the change in 3M itself. By the 1970s, 3M was no longer a company focused on industrial abrasives and tapes. It now had many innovative products for the commercial and consumer markets. Unfortunately this design (or "plumber's gothic") no longer accurately reflected the image of the more sophisticated, higher-tech company that 3M had become.

the old 3M logo has left it's mark, the new logo should be seen as a symbol of evolution, a much needed change.

I agree with Patrick, the present identity is - as Siegel & Gale say - ‘simple is smart’!

This “plumber's gothic” (real name!) logo is very old-fashioned looking and does not reflect the image of a sophisticated and hi-tech company. Why should we mourn the loss of this logo?

The present 3M logo, designed by Siegel & Gale, misses so much vitality and personality. This one by Gerald Stahl is soooooo much better!

The so called 'Mondriaan scheme' that accompanied this logo was surely the inspiration for Dumbar's PTT identity of '89?
