this logo is engraved in my childhood and makes me nostalgic, i have never been more embarrassed to be an irish graphic designer then when i sat in a talk given my erik speikerman and he started talking about the horror of the replacement logo (while the people who had designed the stupid swoosh ball were in the room) and i just wanted to crawl up in shame for the irish design community.

The swoosh-ball (see: www.eircom.ie) that replaced the Telecom Eireann logo is sooo bland and ill-conceived. "The Identity Business" (since swallowed up by Enterprise IG) was a willing accessory in the murder of this design-classic. shame on you!

I remember the old 2" thick Dublin area phonebook, when, as a bored teenager I coloured in part of the letters in ÉIREANN. Very unpatriotic, I now know that (older & 'wiser'). I fancied Adrienne when I was a kid...... There it's out! That's why I recorded the Duran Duran LP All the best lads.

Having traced, photographed, and generally "worked" with this logo until its demise before the new millenium, I had occasion, many's the time, to contemplate its inticate, slightly wonky curves, its sharp bits and roundy bits - and in more rarified moments the entire form as it relates to its own.. parts. And the conclusion I came to, as i'm sure you will, is that it is a fine example,
of a big steaming pile of "celtic" cat excrement.
Yours sincerely. etc.etc.

There seems to be a 'progressive' culture nowadays of CHANGE-FOR-CHANGE-SAKE.
New Director, CEO, CMO; Hey, we're here & let's make an impression !!
Let's fool everyone into believing we're the new dynamic, by spending millions on a new image !!
We have no idea about attracting new clients, or how to nurture existing ones, but - hey, we've got the budget !
===================================
OK, that's my rant against corporate piggies who are very good at spending other people's money.

Peter O'Toole once said;
"I get my exercise by walking behind the coffins of my friends who - exercised".
He's still with us & an example to us all.
Well done Garech & Dec,
I'm proud of what you've done.
JB.

The P+T logo certainly had a charm. You, TE did not. There is a clumsiness in it's crafting and let's be honest it looked dated in '84. Leave Paul Rand out of this, he resolved every mark to perfection... You are not even his illegitimate son. 6ft under is the best place for you old man - and the nasty state organisation you represented.

On an international design barometer this logo was always top-notch. It is such a harmonious, elegant and memorable trademark, that easily evokes a Celtic heritage, an 'ear' and of course the initials of the company... It is an absolute tragedy that it was chewed up by the Celtic-Tiger and spat out as the appalling Eircom 'swooshball'.

A fine thing it was on those white and blue vans with gold stripes. The old PT logo was also a winner with the orange and white vans, oh the olden days.

Ok, I like it but you Irish will kill me... doesn't it look more 60s than 80s? It does remind me of that of the old Spanish RTVE...

A beauty 'tis, evoking the intricacies of old Celtic design with the freshness of new Irish design.

Although the strategy and marketing people (the ‘axis of evil’ in the design world) have tried to kill it off... they can’t! The 'snail' is fighting it’s very own guerrilla tactics! It’s hiding underground as we speak - you can still find it on man-holes around Ireland!

We underestimate sometimes Irish Design! This logotype by Kilkenny Design Workshops would sit gracefully alongside any by Paul Rand or Saul Bass. It's a real shame it's gone!

I miss the Telecom Éireann logo so much....sometimes when I see an old style phonebox in a small country town, that still has the old logo, it brings a tear to my eye..sob sob sob

My sentiments exactly (two previous messages). The 'snail' was a wonder to children and made it's home in the corner of the hallway of every irish home. I miss it.

To think that this design-classic was replaced by another ubiquitous 'swoosh-ball'... so sad!!!!!

I am deeply sorry about the loss of the Telecom Eireann 'Snail'. Everybody who knew this mark will never forget it. There is nothing I can do to help the pain that the Irish public and the designworld are going through.
